Schenectady County Announces New Family Dollar Store for State Street
Will Join New Library Branch & Literacy Center to Boost Neighborhood Revitalization
(Schenectady County, NY) – May 4, 2015 – Schenectady County today announced that Family Dollar will build a new 8,300 square foot store at 954 State Street in Schenectady next to the site where the County will build a new 5,800 square foot branch library and literacy Center. The two projects are being built on a former vacant lot that was purchased by the County. The new facilities will be a boost to neighborhood revitalization efforts in the Hamilton Hill and Vale neighborhoods in Schenectady.
“The County led the way with the new branch library and literacy center,” said Gary Hughes, Chair of the Schenectady County Legislature’s Committee on Economic Development. “Now we are pleased to announce a new Family Dollar will go next door. The two projects represent a combined $3 million investment in our neighborhoods. We welcome Family Dollar’s investment, jobs and commitment to bring a large selection of grocery items to the new neighborhood store.”
“We are thrilled to bring a new Family Dollar store to Schenectady,” said Family Dollar Group VP, Jorge Amador. “The members of the local community have been great partners on this project, and we look forward to opening this new store and being part of the neighborhood for years to come.”
The Schenectady County Legislature will consider the sale of the 954 State Street site tonight at its May Committee Meeting and is expected to approve the sale next week at its regular meeting.
The property will be developed for Family Dollar by Vanguard- Fine, LLC. The company is a leading real estate developer based in Albany. Vanguard-Fine owns or leases over 4 million square feet of retail, office and industrial space.
Kenneth Brownell, Managing Director of Vanguard-Fine, LLC said, “We are happy that we can contribute to the continued economic development of the City of Schenectady with this new Family Dollar project. Schenectady County, Metroplex and the City of Schenectady have been great to work with and we look forward to building this retail development which will give neighborhood residents an opportunity to save on everyday food and household necessities.”
The new Family Dollar store will feature the retailer’s newest layout, designed to make shopping more convenient. This store will offer a wide variety of popular name brands and quality, private brand merchandise at lower prices.
The new store will create between 8-10 new jobs, and the company will recruit Team Members from the local community
The new Phyllis Bornt Branch Library and Family Literacy Center is designed to be used by families and children with wide variety of programs, including those for job seekers who need to upgrade literacy skills to find employment. The library is named for Ms. Phyllis Bornt, a former County librarian who left a bequest to the County to support branch libraries. The focus on literacy is part of a community-wide effort involving the County, City, City School District, the Schenectady Foundation, the Wright Family Foundation and others to equip every member of the community with solid reading, writing and digital literacy skills.
Both the new Library and Family Dollar store will open later this year.
