New Hangar to Be Built at Schenectady County Airport

December 28, 2023

Schenectady, N.Y. — A new aircraft hangar is being proposed for the Schenectady County Airport and the County Legislature will consider approving a land lease for the new facility following a public hearing and FAA approvals in early 2024.

“Working with Metroplex we’ve been able to foster smart growth development at our Airport Business Park,” said Schenectady County Legislator Gary Hughes, Chair of the Economic Development and Planning Committee. “We opened up additional land at the airport for projects like this one, to drive new private investments and return previously vacant, tax-exempt parcels back onto the tax rolls.”

“We are excited to see the continued progress at the County Airport and Airport Business Park,” said Ray Gillen, Metroplex Chair. “SUNY Schenectady’s fast growing pilot training program just opened its new hangar at the Airport and the County reached an agreement earlier this year to open up more than 20 acres of ramp space for new hangar development.”

The new hangar will be constructed by Mr. Sandy Jackson, owner of Jackson Demolition. The company is headquartered in Schenectady. It was founded in 1949 and is now one of the largest and best-known firms in the industry.

The new hangar will allow company officials to visit projects and customers with easy access from the Schenectady County Airport. The 10,000 square foot hangar will accommodate several aircraft.

Mr. Jackson said, “The Jackson family business started here in 1949, and to me this is home. Jackson Demolition has grown nationally, and we are proud to keep the home base of our operations right here where it all started. Schenectady County has always provided great opportunity and support and we look forward to a long relationship with the Schenectady County Airport.”

The County Legislature will consider a long-term ground lease for the new hangar following a public hearing. The ground lease covers a one-acre site. In addition to paying the county for the ground lease, the company will enter into a PILOT agreement so that the property also generates revenues for the Town of Glenville and the Scotia-Glenville School District.

The Schenectady County Airport is home to the 109th Airlift Wing of the NYS National Guard, a regional Navy Reserve Training Center, Richmor Aviation, Reva Air Ambulance, the Schenectady County Recreational Facility Ice Rink, SUNY Schenectady’s Pilot and Air Traffic Controller Training Program and the Empire State Aerosciences Museum. The Airport Business Park is also growing with companies such as SuperPower, C2 Designs and Bruno Machinery all building new facilities in recent years.
