Schenectady, N.Y. — The Schenectady County Metroplex Development Authority met today and approved a number of improvement projects in downtown Schenectady including street lights and sidewalks on North Broadway, curb and crossing improvements near Proctors and new energy efficient lighting at the Metroplex parking garage. In addition, the Board approved submitting a grant application to the State to fund another brownfield clean-up project.
The first project approved by the Board today involves building a new sidewalk on the east side of North Broadway. The sidewalk on the opposite side of the street was just replaced by Metroplex. The new sidewalk will complete work designed to connect the Proctors Block to lower Union Street via North Broadway. In addition to sidewalk improvements budgeted at $19,500, Metroplex will also invest $61,150 to replace nine streetlights on North Broadway. The current lights are outdated and the new lights will match the decorative lighting style used throughout downtown.
Ray Gillen, Metroplex Chair said, “Lower Union Street is really very active right now with new development projects. Linking this area to the Proctors Block makes for a more walkable, enjoyable downtown.”
Along State Street in front of Proctors, the Board approved funding for new curb cuts and handicap-accessible ramps that will make it easier for individuals with disabilities to enter and exit Proctors. On Broadway, Metroplex will work with the City of Schenectady to install improved handicap accessibility at the crosswalk where the Metroplex garage meets Stratton Plaza. These improvements will cost Metroplex $10,000.
Gillen added, “These improvements will make it easier for downtown visitors to enjoy Proctors and all of the other assets downtown.”
The Board also approved moving forward with a project designed to install energy efficient LED lighting at the Metroplex garage that will reduce energy costs by 50%. The project calls for an investment of $44,000 by Metroplex with National Grid providing $107,465.
“National Grid continues to be a great partner in our redevelopment efforts. We appreciate their support for energy saving and money saving lighting upgrades in the garage,” Gillen said.
Finally, the board authorized submission of a grant application to the NYS DEC’s Environmental Restoration Program. If approved, the State will provide $315,000 to fund cleanup of the last section of the Broadway Parking area that needs remediation. Metroplex would provide a 10% match of $35,000.
“DEC support has allowed us to move forward with many brownfield clean up projects around Schenectady County. This grant application is designed to help us obtain the funding needed to complete the extensive clean up and renovation work on the key Broadway corridor which is a major gateway to downtown.”
A National Grid/Metroplex funded clean up and renovation of the Broadway South parking lot is currently nearing completion.
