(Schenectady, N.Y.) Schenectady County officials today announced that McDonald’s Corporation has agreed to demolish a vacant store on Mohawk Avenue in the Village of Scotia. The company has also pledged to address any environmental clean – up that is needed at the site. These actions will assist with redevelopment efforts in the Village of Scotia.
“McDonald’s has made a commitment to Schenectady County to demolish this eyesore at the gateway to Scotia and remediate any environmental issues on site,” said Susan E. Savage, Chairwoman of the Schenectady County Legislature. “This is a major step forward in our efforts to revitalize the Village of Scotia.”
Chair Savage contacted McDonald’s corporate headquarters two years ago to express concern about the impact that the boarded up restaurant was having on the Village of Scotia’s main business corridor. The Scotia location has been closed since 2005.
The County’s economic development team then negotiated an agreement with McDonald’s to demolish and clean-up the site. Until the site is sold, McDonalds’s has promised to landscape and maintain it improving the appearance of Mohawk Avenue, the main business corridor in Scotia.
Ray Gillen, Chair of Metroplex and Commissioner of Economic Development and Planning for Schenectady County said, “McDonald’s listened to the County’s concerns and responded by pledging to work with the community to clean up this site. We are grateful for their assistance and cooperation.”
In return for its commitment to demolish the building by June 30th, address any environmental concerns that might exist and landscape the site, Metroplex will provide $25,000 toward the cost of improving the site. McDonald’s will fund all other project costs.
McDonald’s customers are welcome to visit other locations in the area, including 241-243 Saratoga Road in Glenville.
