Schenectady, N.Y. — Metroplex today joined with officials of the Picotte Companies to announce plans to demolish the closed Sunoco Station at the corner of Nott Terrace and Liberty Street in downtown Schenectady. Demolition will commence by the end of March weather permitting.
“Part of fixing downtown is replacing vacant outdated buildings. We are very pleased to have the full cooperation of Picotte and Sunoco in this effort to clean up a key entry way to our community. This is another step in the right direction,” said Susan E. Savage, Chair of the Schenectady County Legislature.
“The Sunoco site is located at a key gateway to downtown and the current closed station sends a negative message about downtown to residents and visitors alike. We are very pleased that the Picotte Companies and Sunoco have agreed to replace the old station with a shovel ready development site,” said Mayor Brian U. Stratton.
Metroplex officials worked closely with both Picotte and Sunoco to reach agreement on an early termination of the lease on the closed station coupled with plans to demolish the building and prepare the site for future development. Metroplex and Picotte will work jointly to market the site. Combined with other Picotte property located adjacent to the site, a one acre shovel-ready site will be created.
William B. Picotte, Senior Vice President and Director of Leasing for the Picotte Companies said, “As the owner of the Bechtel site downtown as well as an office building on Franklin Street, Picotte is major stakeholder in downtown. We believe that Schenectady is definitely headed in the right direction and we hope that this agreement will improve the appearance of downtown in the short term and hopefully lead to a new development at this site.”
