SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — The Board of Directors of the Capital Region Land Bank met last evening and approved a number of projects designed to boost neighborhoods by removing blighted structures while boosting the supply of new quality, affordable homes in the City of Schenectady.
The Land Bank Board approved a contract award to Jackson Demolition of Schenectady for $357,500 to demolish 143 South Church Street, 2 Landon Terrace, 928 Pleasant Avenue, 1113 State Street and 1115 State Street.
“These vacant properties detract from surrounding neighborhoods and removing them will improve the quality of life and value of surrounding properties for nearby residents. Quality of life is a core value to the Land Bank’s mission and we look forward to seeing these demolitions completed,” said Richard Ruzzo, Chair. Mr. Ruzzo is also a member of the Schenectady County Legislature.
The Land Bank Board approved a resolution to demolish 2 Landon Terrace and provide the property to Habitat for Humanity of Schenectady County. The Land Bank approved up to $100,000 for construction of a new home at the site.
The Board also approved a new development at 715 Rankin Avenue. Last year, the Land Bank demolished a long-vacant warehouse that used to blight the neighborhood. Up to $100,000 was approved last evening to help Habitat for Humanity build three new homes where the vacant warehouse was located. In addition, four neighbors will receive a piece of the former warehouse property to increase their lot size.
Steve Strichman, Executive Director said, “Where a vacant warehouse once stood, we will have three new quality, affordable homes and four neighbors who have larger yards to enjoy. We thank the Land Bank Board, Habitat for Humanity and the neighborhood for working closely with us to make this project a reality.”
The Capital Region Land Bank is administered by Metroplex as part of Schenectady County’s unified economic development team.
