SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — A prominent downtown building that in recent years has been the source of numerous city code violations has been recommended for inclusion on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.

The Wedgeway Building at the corner of State Street and Erie Boulevard was one of 21 properties the state’s Board of Historic Preservation recommended be added to the registries last week, according to an announcement from Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office.

“As we reflect on the broad and diverse history of the Empire State, these nominations represent the places behind the inspiring stories from our past,” Hochul said in a statement. “These additions to the historic registers will help ensure resources are available to protect historic sites so that the past can continue to inspire us today — and into the future.”

The Schenectady County Metroplex Development Authority was behind the monthslong effort to get the building at 271-277 State St. listed on the registries in the hopes of unlocking a number of historic tax credits that could be used to redevelop the structure, which was constructed in 1885.
