Schenectady, N.Y. – The City of Schenectady IDA has reached agreement to sell two vacant lots to two successful Schenectady businesses.
The two lots include a site on Technology Drive that will be purchased by Liedkie Moving and Storage, Inc. for $90,000. The second lot on State Street will be purchased by Mohawk Ambulance for $45,000.
Denise K. Brucker, Chair of the City of Schenectady IDA said, “We are every pleased that two successful businesses will purchase these lots and return them to the tax rolls. Our ongoing efforts to correct past practices at the IDA continue to result in benefits for Schenectady residents.”
Liedkie Moving and Storage, Inc. has been in business since 1917. The company is a major moving and storage firm in Upstate New York. The company plans to construct a 7,000 square foot facility at Lot 6 on Technology Drive after purchasing the two acre site from the City IDA. The new Technology Drive facility will be used to support the company’s growing moving and storage business.
Liedkie is a family-owned business that also operates a major facility on Curry Road in the Town of Rotterdam.
The City IDA has completed a clean-up of Lot 6 with support from the NYS Department of Conservation’s Environmental Protection Program.
Mohawk Ambulance has been in business since 1964. The company employs 180 and is headquartered in Schenectady with locations in Albany and Troy.
The company will purchase a one-third acre site on State Street which is adjacent to their current location to accommodate employee parking.
In recent years, the City IDA which is administered by Metroplex under Schenectady County’s unified economic development team has repaid over $200,000 to the City borrowed by the IDA under previous management but never repaid. The IDA has also corrected pilots and made other repayment agreements that will generate over $1 million in new revenues for the City.
In addition, 5 buildings and one site formerly owned by the IDA have already been returned to the tax rolls. The Center City complex downtown currently owned in part by the IDA will soon be sold adding another key parcel to the tax rolls.
Ray Gillen, Chair of Metroplex said, “These two parcels will be in good hands with two very successful businesses. The IDA continues reforms that were needed due to very poor practices by the previous administrator. The IDA is now doing what it should have been doing all along – creating jobs and tax base for the City.”
