Schenectady County Welcomes First Railex Train from California

October 7, 2008

Schenectady, N.Y., October 7, 2008 — Schenectady County officials today announced the arrival at 6 am this morning of the first Railex produce train to make the cross-country trip from Delano, California to Rotterdam, NY.

Susan E. Savage, Chair of the Schenectady County Legislature said, “We congratulate Railex on the arrival of the first train from California. This is another significant milestone for a company that is changing the way this country transports products in a way that both saves energy and protects the environment. Schenectady County is very proud to be the East Coast hub for Railex.”

The cross country trip took less than five days. In the process of transporting fresh produce across the country, the 55 car train saved 100,000 gallons of diesel fuel that would have been used if 200 tractor trailers made the cross country trip instead of the Railex train.

Railex operates a 250,000 square foot facility in Rotterdam, NY as well as a facility in Wallula, Washington.

The Rotterdam facility was built in 2006. The company chose Rotterdam over many competing locations on the East Coast and the recruitment of Railex was a significant win for Schenectady County’s economic development team. The total investment in Rotterdam exceeded $20 million.

Railex recently invested over $800,000 to expand rail access in Rotterdam in anticipation of the arrival of trains from both Washington State and California.
