(Schenectady County, NY) The Schenectady City Council last night approved awarding a contract worth $1.66 million to Callanan Industries, Inc. to build two trails in the city that will improve safety and add to the number of walking and biking routes available in Schenectady.

Mayor Gary McCarthy said, “We are pleased to move forward with both projects with the goal of making Schenectady a better place to walk and bike. We appreciate the funding from NYS DOT that made both projects possible.”

The first project will be entirely funded with grant dollars awarded to the city from the NYS Safe Routes to School program. It calls for constructing sidewalks on McClellan Street from Kingston Avenue to Nott Street. In addition to new sidewalks the project includes crossings and signal improvements. This corridor is where Schenectady High School and Zoller School are both located and is heavily used by students.

The second project is eligible for 80% reimbursement from NYS DOT. It completes the connection from Central Park to McClellan Street with a new hike/bike lane as part of a larger trail project designed to link Upper Union Street and Central Park to Vale Park and downtown.

City Engineer Chris Wallin said, “We expect these projects to start next spring and finish up by mid-summer of 2018. Both are part of ongoing efforts to make Schenectady walkable and safe for pedestrians and bikers.”
